With the onset of puberty, most women begin experiencing monthly menstrual cycles. Unfortunately, this comes with a plethora of pains such as headache, bodily sores, swelling, abdominal tension, irritability and perhaps even more severely, psychological illnesses such as depression. The main reason for the discomfort is due to hormone imbalances, as the body cannot adjust quickly enough to respond to the cyclical changes.
In Chinese medicine, it is believed that for every illness, there is a treatment. Similarly, for pains related to menstrual cycles, geranium essential oils can help stabilize the mind and body to its original state.
In order to alleviate swelling, simply mix together geranium oil with a plant base oil, and massage the solution onto the abdominal area. This helps to improve blood circulation and strengthen the nervous system. However, because this technique adjusts hormone levels, it is not recommended for women in their first trimester to prevent risks of miscarriage.
Other than being able to balance hormone levels in the body, geranium has many other benefits as well, such as reducing skin oil, preventing bacterial infections, and improving urinal secretion.
Roses
In addition to its beauty and charm, women are swayed by the pleasant scent of organic rose essences. Yet precisely because of its fragrant allure, roses are especially useful during menstrual cycles when a woman tends to demonstrate mood swings. In fact, aromatherapy using rose essences can untangle the heart’s sorrows. Its gentle scent will naturally relax the body and calm the mind, which in turn helps to alleviate the pain and tension of menstrual cycles.
Rose can also acts as a natural moisturizer for the skin. It is a natural skin brightener and antioxidant, which is why skin care products with rose extracts enjoy immense popularity.
However, such a natural beauty comes at a high price. The reason? One metric ton of Damascus roses – the most expensive variety – can produce only one kilogram of essential oil. That’s why essential oils containing roses start selling at only one to two milliliters.
Although the purpose of the two abovementioned therapies is both to help balance hormones and soothe mood swings, its usage is very different. Geranium is usually used in massage treatment, while roses are mostly used for facial care and beauty maintenance.
Just as an aside, has anyone heard of rose geranium? Do you think it is the mixture of the two plants?
In fact, rose geranium is under the geranium division. Its scent is very similar to that of a rose, but its effect is akin to a geranium. So even though it’s called the Poor Man’s Rose, there’s enough poor about it! It would even work nicely for as a natural perfume or toner. So try some yourself – it’s Mother Nature’s best gift for women.
